Turkey fines Adidas $15,000 for pigskin shoes

Turkey has hit German sporting equipment giant Adidas with a fine of more than $15,000 for failing to inform customers that one of its flagship shoe models contained pigskin.The Muslim-majority country's advertising regulator slammed Adidas for describing its "Samba OG" sneakers -- sported in recent years by models Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid -- as made from "real leather", without specifying it came from pigs.

France says EU working toward 'rapid' easing of Syria sanctions

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Thursday that the European Union was working toward swiftly easing Syria sanctions as Paris hosted a conference on the transition in the war-torn country after president Bashar al-Assad's fall.Islamist-led rebels toppled Assad in December after a lightning offensive.The new authorities, headed by interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, have sought to reassure the international community that they have broken with their jihadist past and will respect the rights of minorities.

Tunisian startup takes on e-waste challenge

Engineer turned social entrepreneur Sabri Cheriha hunches over a washing machine at a small depot in a suburb of Tunisia's capital, the unassuming home of a startup he launched to tackle the country's mounting electronic waste problem.Cheriha said there were currently about eight million household appliances and nine million cellphones in use across Tunisia, but once these devices break down or are replaced, "there's no service to properly dispose of them".

Sweden's immigrants on edge after mass shooting

The motive behind Sweden's deadliest mass shooting may never be known but the fact that almost all of the victims had foreign backgrounds has sparked concern among the country's immigrants.On February 4, 35-year-old Rickard Andersson entered the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in Orebro and killed 10 people before turning his gun on himself.Police have not publicly named the victims but their foreign backgrounds soon came to light when their names and photos were published in Swedish newspapers and on social media.
