United Nations special envoy Geir Pedersen urged Israel Saturday to halt its attacks on Syria "at once", after it carried out multiple air strikes targeting the Islamist-led authorities following sectarian violence this week.Fresh Israeli raids were reported overnight, after Israel said repeatedly that its forces stood ready to protect the Druze minority after sectarian clashes killed 119 people, mostly Druze fighters, according to a Britain-based war monitor.

Ex-Liverpool star Firmino 'proud' after more Champions League history

Roberto Firmino said he was proud of making history with his Saudi club and becoming an Asian Champions League winner, six years after lifting the prestigious European equivalent with Liverpool.The 33-year-old Brazilian forward was an important member of Jurgen Klopp's side who won the UEFA Champions League in 2019.Firmino was named the AFC Champions League's most valuable player after inspiring Al Ahli to beat Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 on Saturday as the Jeddah club became Asian champions for the first time.

4 Iranians among 5 arrested in UK for 'terrorism offences': police

British police on Sunday said they had arrested five men, including four Iranians, on suspicion of "preparation of a terrorist act".The arrests were carried out in London, Swindon and the Greater Manchester area, with all five arrested on suspicion of "terrorism offences", London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.The men aged between 29 and 46 were detained by Counter Terrorism Police on Saturday in relation to "a suspected plot to target a specific premises" -- wich was not named -- and remain in custody.

Israel vows retaliation against Yemen's Huthis over airport attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday vowed a multi-phased response to Yemen's Huthis after the rebels struck the area of Israel's main airport, wounding six people and prompting several major airlines to suspend flights.The Israeli military confirmed that the attack, which gouged a large crater in the perimeter of Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, was launched from Yemen and had struck despite "several attempts... to intercept the missile".

Paramilitaries launch first attack on Port Sudan: army

Sudanese paramilitaries on Sunday struck Port Sudan, the army said, in the first attack on the seat of the army-aligned government in the country's two-year war.The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), battling the regular army since April 2023, have increased their use of drones since losing territory including much of the capital Khartoum in March.Army spokesman Nabil Abdallah said in a statement that the RSF "targeted Osman Digna Air Base, a goods warehouse and some civilian facilities in the city of Port Sudan with suicide drones".
